1 After the death of Moses the servant of the LORD, the LORD said to Joshua the son of Nun, Moses’ assistant, 2 “Moses my servant is dead. Now therefore arise, go over this Jordan, you and all this people, into the land that I am giving to them, to the people of Israel. 3 Every place that the sole of your foot will tread upon I have given to you, just as I promised to Moses. 4 From the wilderness and this Lebanon as far as the great river, the river Euphrates, all the land of the Hittites to the Great Sea toward the going down of the sun shall be your territory. 5 No man shall be able to stand before you all the days of your life. Just as I was with Moses, so I will be with you. I will not leave you or forsake you. 6 Be strong and courageous, for you shall cause this people to inherit the land that I swore to their fathers to give them. 7 Only be strong and very courageous, being careful to do according to all the law that Moses my servant commanded you. I’m often concerned with the lack of commitment I see in this generation.
I say that, not as an indictment, but as a concern for the longevity of the faith.
I’m concerned because there are certain traits that are transferrable to other areas of our lives.
I have found that if a person is lazy in one area of their lives, that usually translates to other areas.

Endurance commended as a virtue for God’s people

Joshua was leading a people who had to come through some things.
The current generation was a generation who had walked through an unbelieving generation.

Friday, August 3, 1492:
We departed Friday the third day of August of the year 1492 from the bar of Saltes at the eighth hour. We went south with a strong sea breeze 60 miles, which is 15 leagues, until sunset; afterward to the southwest and south by west, which was the route for the Canaries.
Saturday, August 4: They went southwest by south.
Sunday, August 5: They went on their way and between day and night made more than 40 leagues.
Monday, August 6: The rudder of the Pinta broke and the men began to quarrel and argue. Finally, they made between day and night 29 leagues!
Tuesday, August 7: The rudder again jumped its fastenings, but this day we traveled 25 leagues.
Wednesday, August 8: We would have liked to go to Gran Canaria to leave the badly damaged Pinta, because she leaked badly and had a damaged rudder. We were not able to reach it that day!
Thursday, August 9: We reached Gran Canaria and fixed the ship!
In spite of adverse circumstances and repeated problems, they sailed on!
On September 7, the diary states “All of Friday and on Saturday until the third hour of night we were in very light winds.” Not much happening!
Saturday, September 8: At the third hour of night on Saturday it commenced to blow from the northeast and he took his course and his route to the west. He took much water over the bow, which hindered his way, and he made that day and night only nine leagues. But, on this day we sailed on!
Thursday, September 13: That day and night, going on their course, which was west, they made 33 leagues. The currents were against him…..but on this day we sailed on.
Saturday, September 15: “They sailed that day and night 27 leagues and a few more on their route west. And on this night, at the beginning of it, they saw a marvelous branch of fire fall from the sky into the sea, distant from them four or five leagues.
Monday, September 17: He sailed on his route west and made, day and night, somewhat more than 50 leagues. The current was helping them.
Friday, September 21: That day was mostly calm and later some wind. They made between day and night no more than 13 leagues, some of it on course and some not. But, this day we sailed on!
On Wednesday, September 26 they thought they saw land and spent an entire day sailing toward it only to discover that it was sky. But, this day they sailed on!

Joshua

Joshua is first mentioned in the OT when Moses appoints him to command the Israelite army in the battle against the Amalekites (Exod 17:8–13). Joshua is regularly identified as Moses’ servant in the sense of an executive officer or aide-de-camp (Exod 24:13; 33:11; Num 11:28). Moses formally identifies Joshua as his successor to lead the Israelites in Num 27:18–20.

But leadership demands more than character and experience. This first chapter of the book bearing Joshua’s name makes it clear that the leader’s relationship with God is crucial. Joshua had basic spiritual resources that are ours as well. How Joshua used the divine resources would make the difference between victory and defeat. What were his resources?

(1) Joshua had a promise in God’s stated purpose. “I will give you every place where you set your foot, as I promised David” (Josh. 1:3). God’s announced purpose was to give Israel the Promised Land.

(2) Joshua had the promise of God’s presence. “As I was with Moses, so I will be with you; I will never leave you or forsake you” (v. 5). God had committed Himself to be with His servant and to take on Himself the burden of bringing success.

(3) Joshua had the promise of God’s faithfulness. “You will lead these people to inherit the land I swore to their forefathers to give them” (v. 6). God had committed Himself to a cause, and He would not let His promise fail.

Let me tell you what you need to do this morning, you just need to sail on one more day!
I know that things are coming against you – but this day sail on!
I know that things are less than perfect in your life – but this day sail on!
I know the temptation is to give up and turn back – but this day sail on!

10 Do not fear what you are about to suffer. Behold, the devil is about to throw some of you into prison, that you may be tested, and for ten days you will have tribulation. Be faithful unto death, and I will give you the crown of life.

10 Fear none of those things which thou shalt suffer: behold, the devil shall cast some of you into prison, that ye may be tried; and ye shall have tribulation ten days: be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life.

Just be faithful until the end and the crown is yours!
And this day – sail on!
